The Sleeper Lake Fire (see photos to the right) was ignited by lightening in August 2007. It burned nearly 20,000 acres before finally contained by firefighters from all over Michigan and the midwest.

Here are a few interesting statistics.

The fire greatly impacted the Two Hearted River Watershed. Of the nearly 20,000 acres burned, about 11,180 (62%) were in the Two Hearted Watershed. The remaining occurred in the Tahquamenon River Watershed. The burned area within the watershed equated to about 8% of the total area of the Two Hearted River Watershed.

The fire occurred primary in a wetland which is the head waters for the East Branch of the Two Hearted River and Dawson Creek.
