PUBLIC EDUCATION AND ASSISTANCE
In 2007 the SWP received a grant from the Joyce Foundation to promote watershed protection in the UP coastal communities in the Lake Superior Basin. In particular this project focuses on education of local units of government.
Restoring and protecting the natural environment of the Great Lakes region has been a long-time commitment of the Joyce Foundation. The Foundation supports the development, testing, and implementation of policy-based, prevention-oriented, scientifically sound solutions to the environmental challenges facing the region.
The SWP, through this project, is reaching out to local units of government and providing for them information on watershed and riparian protection. This information includes, but is not limited to, information on limiting the use of burn barrels, riparian buffer ordinance language, etc.

In addition to assistance to local units of government, the SWP assists nearly 20 Watershed Councils UP-wide. Visit Adopt-a-Watershed Program for more information.
